Brian Cairns wins the 2014 Michigan PGA Match Play presented by & PGA Tour !

Midland, MI – Brian Cairns continued his fine play as of late by defeating John Seltzer 3 & 2 to successfully defend his title and win the 2014 Michigan PGA Match Play Championship presented by & PGA Tour at Midland Country Club. Brian played steady all day making some great up and downs for par and a couple clutch birdie putts including one from off the green on hole #15 to go 3 up with 3 to play.

Brian came into this event after having played the last two weeks on the Champions Tour. Brian Monday qualified for the event in Calgary as well as the Quebec Championship that just finished up this past week. This is Brian’s 5th Match Play Championship title.

Championship Match:
John Seltzer  vs Brian Cairns (Cairns wins 3 & 2 )

Brian advanced to the finals by defeating Scott Hebert from Grand Traverse Resort in 21 holes. This was a great match between these two top players that went back and fourth all day. Scott jumped out to an early lead by winning the first two holes. Brian then won holes #4, #5 and #6 to get back to 1 up. They continued to trade holes as Scott birdied Hole #12 and then Brian birdied hole #14 to get back to all square. After making a bogey on Hole #16 Scott birdied hole #17 making the match all square going into the last hole.  Both players made par on the par 3 18th hole forcing extra holes. After trading pars on the first two playoff holes Brian birdied the par 5 3rd hole to win  the match.

John Seltzer  advanced to the finals by defeating Eric Wohlfield of Macatawa Legends Golf & CC 6 & 5 in the other morning semi final match. John made four birdies in the 13 holes and closed it out by hitting it to 3 feet at the par 3 13th hole.

This was the 3rd year in a row that Midland Country Club has hosted the Michigan Section Match Play Championship. We would like to thank them for hosting as they always do a nice job and the golf course was in great shape.

16 of the top Michigan PGA Professionals qualified for the Section Championship through the Western, Northern & Eastern Chapters as well as the Michigan PGA Senior Organization
