PGA launches 2014 Jobs in Golf Month as golf season hiring heats up

By john.holmes

Jobs in Golf Month

The PGA of America

The golf industry supports two million jobs in the United States and more than $55 billion in wage income.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – While it may be the height of winter, hiring in the golf industry begins to heat up this time of year, as employers prepare for the upcoming golf season. Accordingly, the PGA of America’s 13th Annual Jobs in Golf Month will launch in conjunction with the traditional opening of next week’s 61st PGA Merchandise Show and continue promoting employment opportunities in golf throughout February.

Jobs in Golf Month highlights both the online employment resource tools and a breadth of jobs within the $68 billion industry. PGA.com/employment, home to PGA Employment Services, is the centerpiece of the Jobs in Golf Month initiative, as it serves as the golf industry’s online resource for jobs. Over the past year, a total of 3,936 jobs for both PGA Professional positions and the general public were listed. The Jobs in Golf Month initiative at the PGA Merchandise Show includes recruitment services by leading industry employers; employment workshops; and comprehensive PGA Employment Services. In addition, a number of companies will conduct on-site interviews with candidates for open positions.
PGA Employment Services is an invaluable resource for promoting every imaginable golf industry job that is currently open, from general managers to PGA head professionals to equipment representatives to sales to chefs to wait staff. In addition, it serves as a solution that matches job applicants with potential employers by highlighting job opportunities that are currently posted on PGAJobfinder.com.

“Many people think of golf as their dream job, which explains why 2 million people point to the industry as their place of employment,” explains PGA President Ted Bishop. “Golf is a highly attractive workplace, thanks to the beauty of the golf course, as well as the amazing relationships you form with colleagues, contacts and clients who love the game as much as you do. With $55 billion in annual wages generated, many people wonder how they, too, can work in golf. With Jobs in Golf Month, this is your golden opportunity. And for those already in the industry, the program highlights the PGA of America’s commitment to working closely with our Professionals and industry employers to align candidates with new job opportunities.”

PGA Employment Services is supported by 12 regional PGA Employment Consultants, who strategically match applicants with employers that are seeking to hire talented and dynamic PGA Professionals. The Consultants also work to educate employers on the many benefits of hiring a PGA Professional.

Another feature of PGA Employment Center is CareerLinks, a complimentary employment referral service that enables PGA Employment Consultants to help employers identify the skills and experiences necessary to perform a specific job, and then enter the search specifications into the CareerLinks database to identify qualified PGA candidates. This service continues to grow, as 604 positions were posted through CareerLinks in 2013.

PlayGolfAmerica.com launches redesigned website

By mark.aumann

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — PlayGolfAmerica.com, a central resource designed to connect golfers to leading player development programs and the PGA/LPGA Professionals who conduct them, has been redesigned with streamlined navigation and social media interactivity, it was announced today by the PGA of America. Play Golf America will be featured prominently within the main navigation of PGA.com, where consumers will be able to easily find a program that benefits their individual needs.

PLAY GOLF AMERICA: Local PGA Professionals stand ready to serve you

On the redesigned website, golfers will be able to:

• view content based on their ability
• search for programs and events via the main navigation on PGA.com

Whether new to the game or already a golfer, the redesigned website highlights popular programs, including Get Golf Ready, the game’s leading player development program; PGA Junior League Golf; and the PGA Sports Academy.

“We will continue to evolve our digital experiences at the PGA of America in order to bridge the gap between online engagement and on-course activity,” said Kevin Ring, chief marketing officer of the PGA. “This is another step in fulfilling our strategic mandate to grow the game of golf and serve our members.”

PGA.com, which is managed by Turner Sports, is the official online site for the PGA of America, and the ultimate destination for all who love to watch, learn and play golf. By adding these programs to PGA.com, golfers are better connected to the game and PGA/LPGA Professionals.

PGA Professional and decorated military aviator Dan Rooney to receive Donald Ross Award from ASGCA

By john.kim

BROOKFIELD, Wis. – Maj. Dan Rooney, founder of the Folds of Honor Foundation and Patriot Golf Day, and majority owner of The Patriot Golf Club, Tulsa, Okla., has been selected by the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) as the 2014 Donald Ross Award recipient. The award will be presented May 5, 2014 during the 68th ASGCA Annual Meeting in Tulsa, Okla. The award is named for ASGCA’s honorary first president, and is presented to an individual who has made a positive contribution to golf and golf course architecture.

A native of Stillwater, Okla., Rooney began his military career as an Air Force pilot. As a member of the Oklahoma Air National Guard he served three combat tours in Iraq, and has received many decorations, including the Distinguished Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Anti-Terrorism Medal, Combat Readiness Medal and Air Expeditionary Medal.

A Class A PGA Professional golfer, Rooney devotes himself to assisting the families of those killed or disabled in service to the U.S. in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam. Funds raised during Patriot Golf Day support the scholarships awarded to military families through the Folds of Honor Foundation. Since 2007, the Folds of Honor has raised more than $38 million and awarded nearly 5,500 scholarships.

** Spirit of Golf: Folds of Honor helps a family heal **

“Maj. Dan Rooney’s focus and dedication to helping the families of fallen heroes and wounded veterans through golf is inspirational,” ASGCA President Rick Robbins said. “We in the industry know what the beauty of golf layouts and the challenge and fun of the game can do for players. Dan’s dedication puts that inherent good of the game to work by giving back to those who have sacrificed so much for our country.

“Dan has taken the next step in using the game of golf for good by developing a golf course dedicated to helping our military members and their families. Making The Patriot Golf Club a reality shows how far that dedication goes. Donating a portion of the joining fee to Folds of Honor, placing the foundation’s headquarters there and creating programming for wounded warriors shows that the development of the club was really for a higher purpose.”

The Patriot Golf Club motto, “Great Golf for the Greater Good,” is affirmed daily at 1300 hours. Bells toll 13 times in honor of the 13 folds that bring the American Flag to its triangle shape. The Patriot is the host site for The Patriot Cup held annually on Memorial Day and televised on the Golf Channel.

The Donald Ross Award was established by the ASGCA Board of Governors in 1976. For more information on ASGCA, visit www.asgca.org, call (262) 786-5960 or e-mail info@asgca.org.
