Jim Troy wins the Michigan PGA Match Play Championship at Tullymore Golf Resort !

CANADIAN LAKES – The theme for the week was close hard fought matches and the final match did not disappoint.  It took one extra hole for Jim Troy from the Golf Performance Center in Portage, MI to defeat the defending champion Kyle Martin from the Lochmoor Club and capture his first Michigan PGA Section Match Play Championship.

All of the 16 golfers that  competed this week at Tullymore Resort qualified through either their Chapter or Senior Match Play events.

Jim got off to a fast start in this final match as his birdie on #6 put him 3 up early in the match. Kyle battled his way back winning hole #8 with a conceded eagle and then winning hole #12 with a conceded birdie to get back to only one down. After Jim failed to get up and down from the bunker at the par 3 15th hole the match was all square with three holes to play.

The 16th and 17th holes were halved with pars and they headed to the par 5 18th hole all square. With Jim on in two Kyle was able to hit a difficult pitch shot to 4 feet and make the birdie putt to force the playoff after Jim two putted for birdie.

It took only one extra hole after Kyle failed to get up and down for birdie at the par 5 first hole, Jim rolled in his 12 foot birdie putt for the victory and the first place $3,500 check.

The story of the first round of 16 was a series of tightly contested matches with 6 of the 8 matches going at least 16 holes. Steve Vecellio from Birmingham Country Club outlasted David Higham of Midwest Golf and Turf winning 1 up in 23 Holes.

Defending champion Kyle Martin from the Lochmoor club took down Jordan Young from the Fox Hills Learning Center 3 & 1 in the first round. Kyle then outlasted  Steve Vecellio winning 1 up on Hole #18 to advance to the final four.

Jim Troy had to get by two past champions on his way to the final four. He defeated the 1998 champion Ron Beurmann from the Country Club of Jackson in the first round and the 2009 champion John Seltzer of Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids in the second round.

In the first morning semi final match of the day it was a back and forth battle as Kyle and Lee Houtteman from Manitou Passage only halved two holes on the front nine. That continued on  the back nine as Lee made birdie at #10 to get to 1 up. Kyle then birdied #13 and won #14 to get the lead back at 1 up.  Lee then birdied #16 to get the match back to all square where it would remain that way heading into #18. With Lee on  the green about 15 feet from the hole Kyle hit his pitch to about 3 feet at the par 5 18th hole.  Lee’s birdie putt slid by and Kyle was able to finish off the birdie for a 1 up victory.

In the other semi final match Jim Troy from the Golf Performance Academy continued his fine play making 5 birdies on the front nine, but the match still remained all square as Scott Hebert from Traverse City Golf & CC was able to make 3 birdies of his own. After going back and forth on  the back nine Jim Troy was able to take a 1 up lead into #18 after making  birdie at #16 to go1 up. With Scott about 3 feet from the hole Jim was able to roll in the 10 foot birdie putt for the 1 up victory advancing to his  first Michigan PGA Match Play Final.

By making it to the final four of the Michigan Section Match Play finals all four players pick up wins in  their respective Chapter / Senior Organization match play events. Lee Houtteman is the Senior Match Play Champion, Kyle Martin is the Eastern Chapter Match Play Champion, Scott Hebert is the Northern Match Play Champion and Jim Troy is the Western Chapter Match Play Champion.

This is Jim Troy’s first time competing in the Michigan Section Match Play as he has only been in the Michigan PGA Section for the last two years and failed to qualify out of the Western Chapter Match Play event last year. Jim is no stranger to championship competitive golf as he played four years at Nebraska and 4 years on the Hooters Tour. Jim  then worked at Elyria Country Club outside of Cleveland and then Sunset Ridge Country Club outside of Chicago before taking a position with Clark Peterson at the Golf Performance Academy in Portage, MI last year.

Jim is off to fast start these first two years however by winning both the Michigan Section Assistants Championship and the Western Chapter Championship last year and this Match Play Championship title.

Pershern / Martin win the 2016 Sterling Cut Glass / Bushnell Golf Pro Assistant Championship

Birmingham ,MI – It took one extra hole for the team of Head Professional John Pershern and his Assistant Kyle Martin from the Lochmoor Club to win the 2016 Sterling Cut Glass / Bushnell Golf Pro Assistant Championship on Monday at Birmingham Country Club, giving them their second Pro – Assistant victory.

A large field of 48 teams competed Monday in this 36 hole best ball format made up of one Professional and one Assistant Professional from the same facility. Professionals with multiple Assistants had the option once again to bring and team with each of those Assistants.

After the morning round we had 2 teams tied at the top with rounds of (-8) under par 64 ,the team from Flint Golf Club with Professional Scott Brotebeck and his Assistant Nick Sears along with the team from Meadowbrook Country Club with professional Frank McAuliffe and Assistant Professional Travis Dodson.

Sitting only one shot back after round 1 it did not take long for the team of Pershern and Martin to get things going as they made eagle on their first hole of the afternoon round. This par 5 first  hole at Birmingham Country Club seemed to be the difference maker as they made eagle there in round one as well, picking up skins in both rounds.

The second round score of 64 for the team of Pershern and Martin which included a birdie at the last put them at  (-15 under) 129 total. The team of McAuliffe and Dodson continued their fine play as the followed up their morning round of 64 with a 65 in the afternoon and a 129 total ,tied for the lead.

These two teams went back for what would be only one extra hole to decide the winner.  With his Assistant Kyle Martin in close about 4 feet from the hole John Pershern was able to roll in his 15 foot birdie putt to clinch the victory as both Travis and Frank were unable to hit the green.

This victory gives John and Kyle their second Michigan PGA Pro – Assistant Championship title as they won this event in 2014 at Knollwood Country Club.

Thank you to Birmingham Country Club for their hospitality and hosting the event. Everyone really enjoyed the golf course and it was great to be able to have an event here after the recent renovations.

We would also like to thank our sponsors of this event Sterling Cut Glass and Bushnell Golf. They are both long time supporters of the Michigan PGA and have both sponsored this event the last two years. Thank you to Steve Rentschler from Sterling Cut Glass and Tim Grombala for their support and for being on site Monday.
