BATH –  The finals are set as John Seltzer, the head pro at Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids  will face Kyle Wittenbach ,head golf coach at Ferris State University in the Michigan PGA Section Match Play Championship presented by the PGA Tour at the award winning  Eagle Eye Golf Club at 8:30am on Wednesday.

John advanced to the finals in dramatic fashion with a chip in birdie at the par four 16th hole to defeat Kevin Muir from The Wyndgate 3 & 2. John defeated Scott Cook from the Golf Club at Thornapple Point 5 & 4 in the morning quarter – final match. John looks to claim his second Match Play Championship title as he won in 2009.

Kyle advanced to the finals by defeating the defending champ Scott Hebert from Traverse City Golf & Country Club 2 & 1 in the morning quarter – final match and then cruised to victory with a 6 & 4 victory in the afternoon over Josh Fryer from Franklin Hills Country Club. Kyle looks for his first Michigan PGA Match Play title.

Heavy rains overnight and into Monday morning has forced the finals into Wednesday  as players were only able to complete the Round of 16 matches on Monday and then the quarter and semi final matches on Tuesday. The finals will take place at 8:30am Wednesday morning. For live scoring of this final match click HERE

The 16 golfers that participated  have advanced from chapter or senior organization match play rounds to battle at Eagle Eye for the Jim Picard Trophy and a $3,600 first-place place prize.

Eagle Eye, a previous host for the Michigan PGA Professional Championship, was designed by Chris Lutzke in collaboration with Pete Dye. It is a rolling “links” style design with multiple tee options. It has consistently won awards and received top ratings since it was founded in 2003.

Among its most notable holes is No. 17, a 146-yard par 3 that Lutzke designed as a replica of the famous Dye-designed island hole 17th at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Fla. Dye’s testy par 3 has beguiled the best golfers in the world, and the replica at Eagle Eye has the same effect.

McAuliffe & Vecellio win the 2018 Winston Collection / St Andrews Products Senior Junior Championship

Jackson, MI – The team of Frank McAuliffe from Meadowbrook Country Club and Steve Vecellio from Birmingham Country Club were able to follow up their impressive opening round of (-9 under par) 63 in the morning with a 64 in the afternoon to win the 2018 Winston Collection / St Andrews Products Senior Junior Championship at the Country Club of Jackson on Monday.

28 teams teed it up on Monday in the Winston Collection / St Andrews Products Senior Junior Championship, with one professional 50 years of age and older and one professional under the age of 50. After the morning round we had two teams tied at the top with rounds of 63 including Frank and Steve along with the host professionals from the Country Club of Jackson Ron Beurmann and Henry Thompson.

With 5 teams within 2 shots of the lead Frank and Steve knew it would be close and take something special to bring home the victory. That is just what they did when they made eagles at both #2 and #5 on route to their afternoon round of 64 and a (-17 under) 127 total, good for a 2 shot victory.

Henry and Ron followed up their round of 63 with a 65 in the afternoon finishing tied for second with the team of Gary Smithson from Quai Ridge Golf Course and Dan Urban from Gull Lake Country Club ,both at (-15) ,129 total.

The Country Club of Jackson provided a great venue for this championship as the golf course was in great shape and the food and beverage team provided a first-class lunch.

We would also like to thank our sponsors of this event – the Winston Collection, St Andrews Products and the PGA Tour. Their sponsorship provided a $12,000 purse for this event with the winning team taking home $2,500.

Herbstreith / Vecellio win the 2018 Sterling Cut Glass / Evolve Golf / Levelwear Pro – Assistant Championship

Roscommon, MI – After two rain delays and 4 playoff holes it was the team of Joe Herbstreith and Steve Vecellio from Birmingham Country Club that found a way to win the 2018 Sterling Cut Glass / Evolve Golf / Levelwear Pro – Assistant Championship on  Monday at Forest Dunes Golf Club.

We had 77 players and 47 teams tee it up on Monday in this 36 hole best ball event. Teams consisted of a pro and a assistant professional from the same facility ,pros were also allowed to bring and team with multiple assistants.

The morning rain and soft conditions gave way to low scores all day at Forest Dunes Golf Club. After the morning round it was the team of Brandon Roby and Ben Cook from Cascade Hills Country Club that held a one shot lead with a round of 63. With 3 teams one shot back at 64 you knew it was going to be close.

Two of those teams just one shot back after the morning round were the teams from Meadowbrook Country Club with professional Frank McAuliffe and assistant Travis Dodson as well as Joe and Steve. Both teams  were able to follow up that morning round of 64  with another 64 ,which put them at (-16) under  and tied at  the end of the day.

After 3 playoff holes the teams were still tied and told that they would have time for one more playoff hole before darkness made it unplayable.  It was here on Hole #1 that Steve Vecellio made a 40 foot birdie putt that proved to clinch the first Pro – Assistant victory for Joe and Steve. Great playing by a lot of teams as we had 3 teams finish just one shot back at 129 including Brandon Roby and Ben Cook from Cascade Hills, John Pershern and Kyle Martin from The Lochmoor Club and Dan Urban and Josh Burt from Gull Lake Country Club.  Dan and Josh had the low round of the tournament with an incredible 59 in the afternoon !

I thought the staff at Forest Dunes did a great job ,especially the grounds crew getting things ready to go in the morning after the heavy rains. It is always a treat to have an event there as it makes for  a great event .

We had great sponsorship support at this event with Sterling Cut Glass, Evolve Golf and Level Wear all stepping up to sponsor the event. All three companies had reps on site.
