Michigan PGA Fall Meeting

EAST LANSING, MI – The Michigan PGA held its Annual Fall Meeting on Monday, October 23. With approximately 285 Members in attendance, President Ron Osborne welcomed everyone to Eagle Eye Golf Club. He also welcomed special guests Legal Counsel John Allen, David Graham from GAM, Marsha Hacker, Kathy Grayson and Tim Marks, PGA Employment Services and all Past Presidents in attendance.

Randy White administered the invocation and remembered deceased PGA members Duck Duckwall, Erich Kuhlman and Brent Veenstra.

After Ms. Hacker sang a wonderful rendition of our national anthem, President Osborne thanked the Board and staff for their commitment and dedication during his tenure as president. Outgoing Board plaques were given to Harry Dixon, John Lindert, Chris Moore, John Seltzer, Joe Simpson, Sam Stover and Doug White.

Secretary Bob Bales announced the 2017 Michigan PGA Hall of Fame inductee Tom Harding, Instructor at Kendall Academy of Golf.  The Hall of Fame recognizes and acknowledges those PGA Professionals who have excelled in their profession, achieved remarkable accomplishments, and made significant contributions to the game, the industry and the Michigan PGA.

Honorary President Doug White oversaw the voting for officers. Kevin McKinley, Bob Bales and John Pershern were elected President, Vice President and Secretary, respectively.

Special Awards Chair Doug Kreis presented plaques to the 2017 Special Awards winners:

Assistant Professional of the Year – Rocky Mullendore, PGA
Bill Strausbaugh – Jeff O’Malley, PGA
Golf Professional of the Year – Kevin McKinley, PGA
Merchandiser of the Year–Private – Jeremy Lathwell, PGA
Merchandiser of the Year–Public – Ian Ziska, PGA
Merchandiser of the Year–Resort – Zack Chapin, PGA
Patriot Award – Doug Bell, PGA
PGA Horton Smith – Aaron Waltz, PGA
Player Development – Dean Marks, PGA
Teacher of the Year – Jason Guss, PGA
Youth Player Development – Scott Wilson, PGA

After a short break, town hall discussions began with Doug Kreis recognizing and celebrating PGA of America Award winners Zack Chapin, PGA Merchandiser of the Year-Resort, and Kevin McKinley, PGA Patriot Award, who gave brief overviews of their successes in the golf business.

All of the Special Awards winners, National Award winners and Michigan PGA Hall of Fame inductee were honored at a dinner Sunday evening at the Country Club of Lansing.

Kevin McKinley then highlighted some of the main topics addressed in the planning process of the Michigan PGA Strategic Plan.

Lastly, David Graham of the GAM addressed the upcoming changes to the handicap system administration here in Michigan.

The afternoon education seminar titled “Expert Strategies for Coping with Adversity in Life and in Business” was presented by Michelle Byrd, Ph.D., a fully licensed clinical psychologist and professor at Eastern Michigan University, and Tom Waltz, Ph.D., Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist and researcher.

Drs. Byrd and Waltz provided a general overview of what major stress reactions can look like, the short- and long-term consequences of stress and how participants can evaluate their current coping strategies and habits. Over 120 Michigan PGA members were in attendance.
