Uchida takes 2016 National Car Rental PGA Section Assistants Championship Presented by Cleveland/Srixon in playoff

Lansing, MI – It was a great day for golf at The Country Club of Lansing this past Monday, August 22nd. The 2016 National Car Rental PGA Section Assistants Championship Presented by Cleveland/ Srixon teed off at 8am for their first 18 hole round of the day. After carding 6 birdies in the opening round, Josh Fryer of Franklin Hills Country Club came into the clubhouse with the lead, shooting a 69. Also putting up 6 birdies in the first round was Travis Dodson from Meadowbrook, who came into the clubhouse in 2nd, with a 71.

After a break for lunch provided by the staff at the Country Club of Lansing the players went back out for the second round of the day. Brandon Uchida of Shenandoah Golf & Country Club opened up the day shooting a 73, which put him right in the hunt and continued that excellent play by shooting even par on the front during round 2. Last year’s winner, Jim Troy of Golf Performance Academy was also looming after firing a 73 in the first round. Things started to heat up in the 2nd round, especially between the group featuring two of the guys at the top of the pack, Fryer and Chris Mory of Hawk Hollow. After Fryer took a triple bogey on the par 4, 10th hole it was anyone’s game.

Uchida posted a one under par round of 71 in the afternoon ,which put him at a 144 total and good enough to force a playoff with Josh Fryer who finished the day at 144 as well with an afternoon round of 75.

Uchida and Fryer teed off on the par 4, 18 and each put it on the back of the green for a very lengthy birdie putt. Fryer put his putt several feet past the hole, while Uchida was able to give himself a more manageable par putt. After Fryer was unable to sink his par attempt Uchida was able to sink his putt for par and win the tournament.

Mory took sole possession of 3rd place allowing shooting a 145 and Troy secured the first alternate spot after putting up a 146. We had a tie for our second alternate spot between two players Justin Pollack of the Country Club of Detroit and Reece Bartelt from Kalamazoo who each carded a 147 for the day. They took to the first hole for their playoff where Pollack was able to make birdie and secure the second alternate spot with Bartelt taking the third and final spot.

Congratulations to our champion, Brandon Uchida as well as our runner-up Josh Fryer. Congratulations as well to Chris Mory from the Jason Guss Academy at Hawk Hollow who will join Brandon and Josh to represent the Michigan Section at the 40th National Car Rental Assistant PGA Professional Championship that will be conducted at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida, Oct. 27-30.
